I want to say Roddy McDowell (and I didn't Google it -- and you'll know that if I'm wrong), but then I may be going all "Planet of the Apes" on you -- "The Beast," indeed. . .
And I should have read the first point of your reply more carefully.

Keir Dullea for the win. And Gary Lockwood as Frank.
I can’t remember who played HAL.
I do remember to this day, Arthur Clarke’s sentence, paraphrasing , How
“man had Finally found something (space exploration ) as exciting as war......”
Inspiring me to science.

Time to close this thread before it goes completely off the rails! (abscate is correct about Dave. I barely remember Frank. And, HAL? Maybe HAL's why I'm a programmer-- trying to protect the human race!)
Back to the topic-- The grommet ("bushing" in Volvo-speak) worked! The key now locks the door. And, I performed the Transport Mode exit procedure (lock/unlock 3 times with the key), and now the electric lock button on the door panel, the overhead light buttons, and homelink (and who knows what else?) function as they should. Daughter is ecstatic. I'm relieved. Maybe this Beast can be tamed, after all. Poking around its guts has given me a sense of the abuse it has endured during its first seventeen years. Perhaps all it needs is a little gentle treatment (and a bunch of $$$ and time!).
Thanks, one last time, to all who have contributed!

ADDED year and model to title
DDM - make sure you read about the 2001 5 speed transmission in the sticky - don't panic, but about 10% of those exhibit some bad behaviour. It should also have the neutral stop software removed at the dealer (a freebee, I think?)
Defintely think about drain and fill series.
