DIY motor mount rubber injection fail

Post by IslandV70 »

The stock top motor mount was too loose for my taste, so I bought one of the urethane mounts and installed that. The car drove great but vibrated too much :(
I bought a new stock mount and I was back to square 1, too loose but no vibration. I got the idea to fill the air spaces in the mount with silicone rubber. I bought some 2-part mix from Amazon and filled the mount with it. Now the car drives great but the vibration is about 90% as much as the urethane mount and the stock mount plus the rubber mix cost more than the urethane mount :(
I am sticking with it for now because I just hate sloppy mounts.

What issues did the standard mount cause? I question what the long term effects will be from a harder mount.

I filled my stock mount with glass sealer which was very soft, 15 shore I think. Still vibrated like crazy! Drilled lots of holes in it and tightend the mojnt with car in D if memory serves. Now it is ok but mojnt is not any stiffer then a new stock mount :D.

I believe the mount must be very loose/flexible to not get vibrarions in the cabin. I'd stick with stock, only filled mine because the rubber had split some on mine and was too cheap to buy a new one haha.

I did the same thing except with roofing material. If the mount was new one could try just adding the rubber tubing without the sealer. I do notice a little more noise but not at idle. It was most likely from the strut tower mounts being solid now.

I have the round SuperPro insert and I can tell you it loses some of the harshness over time. Also, I pay less attention to it :)

The rubber is getting quieter now. I like how it drives enough to put up with it.

$23.15 for a new one that is every bit as good as the updated original.

I’ve been running one for ~20k miles. I’ve run the poly ones before, not to my liking and they eventually crumble into pieces.
