2004 S60 non turbo timing belt hex key window

Hello everyone:

I just got a 2004 S60 non turbo and I am doing the timing belt kit on my car. I am really confused about the mechanical tensioner on what position the hex key window is supposed to face before tightening down the center bolt. From what I can gather It depends on which year and engine number I guess it’s supposed to be 7-o’clock or 2 o’clock. Also when done as I rotate the engine to check for valve-piston contact and to make sure the timing marks keep aligning up. Which position should the temperature indicator on the tensioner always remain as I rotate the engine by hand. I hope is not confusing this is my first time doing this kind of timing belt

The tensioner settings are temperature related, they should be the same regardless of the year. The middle of the window, I believe, is around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Right of center is more like 87-90, and left of center is 60-65. Don't quote me on that though, I'd have to double check.

The tension isn't critical - anywhere in the range of the fingers will be fine, but check it after you tighten the holding bolt AND turn the engine over twice to equalize all the tension out of the belt.

Ok so I watched Robert’s video, I guess where I am confused is when everything is all done where should the hex window be facing. Maybe I am wording it wrong, by moving the hex window counterclockwise you are removing tension and it makes sense that it would start at around 7 o’clock. I looked at FCPs video and it kind of confused me when they said some engine models start at 2 or 7. I also am including a picture before I actually took anything apart. I do remember as I rotated the engine to set the timing marks that temperature indicator was slightly left of the optimal center position. Maybe this was because the tensioner was already worn. So it doesn’t really matter where you start because the belt will be loose.

The needle needs to stay about in the middle of the two small vertical tabs with the engine cold, during a summer day (around 70F outside temp). In the pic above, the tension is not correct if the engine is at 70F because the needle sits too much to the left

As you rotate the engine the pointer on the tensioner will move back and forth a bit especially if it’s a new belt that’s been folded over in the packaging.

Yup. Just loosen the tensioner bolt, set it again, tighten it down, and roll the engine over. Usually takes doing this twice.

I watched robert’s and peppermint’s YouTube videos and I think got right this time??

I did the following:

1) I routed the belt around the all the pulleys making sure the timing marks didn’t move with use of a IPD cam locking tool.

2) Rotate the hex key window counterclockwise to 11 o’clock to fully remove tension from the belt

3) Rotate the hex key clockwise past all the finger tabs to set the pre-tension

4) Then finally back counterclockwise with the indicator tab in adjustment window in the middle of the tabs. and the hex window facing at 2 o’clock

I tried rotating the engine several times and the marks do in fact line up, I also enclosed a video of the engine running with the indicator tab oscillating and remaining in the center

Oh sorry I forgot to mention that is was 75 deg Fahrenheit when the engine was running
