PCV replacement on 05 xc70

Post by Clockboy » Fri Sep 06, 2019 8:52 am

The top hose of the pcv system has become so brittle it broke where it goes under the engine cover. I'm assuming since that is so brittle it has not been serviced and is an indication of the condition of the rest of the system. I've had the car for about 1.5 years and it's time to think about the pcv, timing belt, etc. It burns less than a quart of oil in 5k miles, has not lost any coolant and there are no other indications of engine stress.. I've not bothered with the glove test since the gaping crack would probably nullify the results. My question is there are two kits for the pcv system. One includes the coolant pipe assembly and the other does not. The price difference is significant. Does the coolant pipe assembly degrade at the same rate as the rest of the system? Should it be done while everything is accessible?.

cn90 once said, after 100,000 miles PCV is due. This may help with scope of work https://parts.volvocarslisle.com/a/Volv ... 58104.html.

Restoring engine cooling is mother of all.

Yes, replace everything. That coolant pipe is a heated PCV pipe that works when engine is under the boost, i.e. most of driving. Turbo engines have very little places where it can take vacuum, so clogged/cracked pipe will loose whatever vacuum was available. That's why the pipe is heated.

Thanks for the comments. Will do it all - full PCV system and timing belt. Been through it on a 98 and learned some valuable lessons.

VTL, could you maybe expound on that some?

(Along with the breather box, j-pipe, crank vent hose, etc..) I've always just replaced the nipple & copper crush washers on the banjo. I've never replaced a banjo bolt, just cleaned.

Specifically on the nipple - where the barb of the hard plastic line inserts into the coolant line, if I can get a q-tip in there and I don't sense blockage a couple inches in, I figure it's probably pretty clear & then reuse it (coolant line, that is. I have yet to encounter a hard plastic line that doesn't snap when removing IM/banjo bolt.)

From my understanding, that (nipple/hard plastic barbed line) is the most critical component of Volvo Part # 30731068 to replace. Since it necks down to such a small aperture at the hard plastic line, the potential for clogs are obviously most prevalent at that juncture.

I understand that the part has been updated (& can see the difference) since the originals installed in 2002-2006/7, but if blockages in the hard lines prior to the nipple are a rarity, why does the entire assy need to be replaced at $175? Do the rubber elbow's fail? On the updated part it looks like there are 2 elbows & 1 rubber slip joint, on the original it's all covered in the molded insulation.

In no way am I challenging, just want a bit more clarity. If I'm wrong, I need to be realigned.

Make sure you have an updated banjo bolt, with the ball valve inside.

The problem with PCV parts is they develop cracks. Even if all the car was seeing is a synthetic oil (PAO, not HC) the PCV may leak vacuum because of cracks. That thin plastic pipe failed in my PCV in just 3 years, I probably had it damaged during installation. I shortly realized how hard all the rubber became, so went ahead and replaced it all once again, and have the crank vacuum checked form time to time now.

PCV is a pain in this engine.

My upper PCV is deteriorated in half. Is there a complete kit that includes all replacement pieces/parts that would be ideal to replace while “down in there?”

Also, would this severed hose throw a P0442 code?

Real Volvo code (via DiCE+VIDA) will say for sure, but most likely you need this:

I replaced the gas cap as a first move and I think it took care of my “small evap leak!”

Now on to the “Cam Sensor Bank A”
