Wastegate flapper

Post by Jhagins1 »

Guys I am rebuilding the head on my 850r and have the turbo off and decided to do it while off. The wastegate flapper appears to be able to move up and down a lot. If not I. The right position it allows a gap at the top or bottom of the port. Is this normal.

I don't think it's normal but I can pull one off the shelf tomorrow and check. Meantime, a pic would be helpful if you have the parts on the bench.

It's normal for the flapper itself to move around a bit when it's open, but when the wastegate is closed (held shut by the actuator) it should seal tight.

I will take some pics. I jb welded it. The door fits in a bushing and the bushing moves up and down allowing it to leave a gap. I got the bushing to stop moving so now just the door moves. No more up and down. Just open and close.

Uhhh... sounds to me like you're setting yourself up for boost issues, whether that's over- or under-boosting depends on how you JB welded it.

Pics will be necessary here.

Go into "full editor & previrw" or click "post reply" at the top of the thread, then just below the text box, you can select "attachments" and upload it from there.
Otherwise, you can post from an image hosting site like Imgur using the BB code link option.

The part that is jb welded is the bushing that the flapper shaft sits in. It is the part that is moving up and down.

Ah, I see. I don't think I've seen that repaired that way before... best bet is to get a new turbine housing.

That's odd. I'd be concerned about that JB Weld inside the housing coming loose and breaking apart after so many heat cycles. Debris like that would not be great to hit spinning turbines and go down the intake into engine.
