Anyone else have issues with excess oil consumption? (S60 2013)

Post by TokiyoRio »

In the past 8 months I’ve needed oil changes every 1000-2000 miles. My low pressure oil light would come on. I’d take it to my local pep boys and they’d refill it. Twice for free because they felt bad. Finally went to the dealer today and this is an issue with some models. It either needs a new engine or piston rods(rings?). Unfortunately in order to have my warranty cover it I have to start from square one and bring my car to the dealer every 500 miles so they can properly document my oil levels. I had all of my previous receipts from oil changes but since it was never documented that the oil was low there is no proof of excess oil burning. Anyone have experience with this or had it fixed? I’m hoping after 3 months of proper documentation i will have a good case to prove the repair is needed.

Not the right section of the forum - the section here is for 2001-2009, but yes, it was a widespread issue with the 2012-up engines, caused by a faulty breather (PCV) unit, I believe the unit is easy to replace however, if left without being replaced it may damage the pistons (and rings) so the pistons will indeed need replaced as well - costly. Volvo took care of most of the cars still under warranty. Normally the dealer has indeed to survey the oil level over a period of time, then make a decision. This same PCV defective part was used on other european cars such as Audi and Bmw, my parents Q5 had the same problem, the Audi dealer documented the oil consumption the same way and had it fixed.

If you run the engine until the oil pressure light comes on, you won’t get a warranty claim repair.

That would classify as abuse.

I’m a bit worried OP has a leak and essentially is just running out of oil. I don’t think you can internally burn 3-4 quarts of oil in 1000-2000 miles without some impressive external symptoms.

Haha - and I was thinking there is no way you can leak 3-4 quarts of oil in 1000-2000 miles without some impressive external symptoms (oil all over the driveway, garage, back of the car ... ).
