2001 V70 XC Transfer Case Oil?

Post by sonnyny »

Have a leaky right side axle seal in my transfer case. Vehicle has 102K on it. The manual doesn't list transfer case oil type in specifications. Anybody know what weight i should use, type also?. My older 98 uses gl85w.

Okay, I'll try to help. Even if I don't know the answer I can look some of these things up. Problem is what you list as the right "transfer case oil" on a '98 seems very much out of line from what I've seen and makes me think that you have a car with a manual transmission. It would help to know your location and if indeed you have a manual transmission or not. Only in '04 was an XC offered in the U.S. with a manual transmission. All other years had automatic transmissions only. If you're talking about an XC that's an automatic, the answer is easy: Only JWS3309 compliant ATF such as Mobil-3309 or Toyota IV type or Volvo's own ATF. If you're talking about a manual transmission, it will take me a little time to search the other forums where XC owners from other countries (where manual transmission XC were more prevalent) have posted....so bear with me. If this helps any at all, the transmission fluid in the axle wells come from the transmission fluid that is used in the transmission and is not a separate chamber.

In the meantime, sending me a personal and degrading email for not being able to help you, especially when you don't list your specific car type (automatic or manual) or your location is unacceptable. Any more outbursts of that nature will get you banned from this site. I will also add that sometimes I post such things as "I'm sorry, I don't know how to help you...maybe someone else will chime in, etc." as an attempt to bump the thread up so that it might catch someone else's eye who knows how to help quicker. Anyway, enough said... just keep things clean and we will all be more willing to help you.

Dave,
What the heck are you going on and on about? :!: :!:
He says on the top of the post, "01 XC" and I assume he means the bevel gear oil as bevel gears can leak.
I don't have the answer as to which oil but now that you (dave) get what he's asking perhaps you can dig up your Vadis and tell him
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

Now it makes sense...the bevel gear oil...hmmm. OK, now that I have VADIS opened to that particular car, the instructions say to remove the level plug (and I would suck out all of the oil with a pump) and fill with oil, part #1161648 until oil runs out the hole and then drain off 0.2 liters before sealing. After a quick check on another site, I see full synthetic 75W90 gear oil being recommended. To the original poster, good luck and I hope this answers your question and you figure out how to get the old oil out and fill with the correct stuff. If you don't, post back.
