Vvt Oil leak, block off?

Post by bufordTjustice »

Greetings,
I recently picked up a 2004 s60 2.5t at an auction for 900 bucks. I am pretty mechanically inclined, but this is my first Volvo.

When I got the car it had a bad oil leak that was easy to traced to the exhaust cam. Last weekend I spent the time and changed out the timing belt along with both cam seals, thinking the exhaust cam seal was the issue. I was kind of surprised I actually got the timing correct with two vvts, and no CEL. However the leak is still there, if not worse than before.

This leads me to believe that the exhaust vvt hub is the cause of the leak. It also had quite a bit of in and out play. Way more than the intake. Would replacing the large o ring on the vvt hub be worth a shot? I also came across people deleting the vvt hub on various forums. Would it be safe replace the solenoid with one of these block off plates? If understand correctly the plate blocks off the oil passage to the hub. If the car proves to worth the investment, I get a new hub. Looking for a short term solution for the time being.

Blocking plate in question:

Go to the junk yard and pickup a hub without play👍

I’m sure it’s goimg to throw a code if it expects VVT and there is no solenoid, so if you need CEL OFF for inspection, that’s a problem

What's your crankcase pressure?

I checked the pressure with the latex glove test. The glove pulled into the oil fill neck both at idle and at 2k rpms showing negative pressure.

Question: will any junkyard vvt exhaust hub that looks identical from a dual vvt hub engine work? Does it matter if it's from a 2.5 or 2.4?

No inspections or emissions test in Idaho. Would like to avoid a CEL if I can though

Hubs should have part #s that must match what you have now.

The ECU might also inhibit boost if it can’t adjust VVT to specs, I don’t think eliminating the hub is a good idea

Transmission in drive, one leg on brakes, one on accelerator. Otherwise there won't be any boost. Revving in P does nothing for boost.

2.5 for 2.5, 2.4 for 2.4

I appreciate the responses. I will try the glove test again. I probably need to plan on going through and replacing the breather system. The last owner ignored a lot of maintenance.

I will try to located a used vvt hub. It needs to be replaced to do things right. Junkyards are few and far between here, hopefully I'll have some luck.
