My 1995 855 have a banging noise recently whenever go over "a bunch of small bumpers" or rough road. The noise is more pronounce when no one sit on the back seats. I replaced both rear shocks and rear shock mount. But banging noise still there. No banging noise in rear passenger side.
Any idea about this banging noise coming from ?
Thanks,
Ching-Ho Cheng

It could be the rear axle bushing that connects the rear axle to the frame. If you replace it be sure to buy OE quality or you will be replacing it in very short time again. They are pricey but last forever.
The job is nasty to do, I let my indie do it.
This is the good quality part:

They have cheap versions of this for 37 bucks but they really don't last.

I replaced both sides back in 2011 (@ about 240k miles), passenger side first (Scantech part) and then driver side (Febi part). My car now has 388k miles. So if this bushing is gone bad, it will banging up and down ?
Thanks,

It is also possible that the inner Delta Link bushing has failed. The one that connects the DL arms to each other. They usually split the bracket around the bushing and can rattle around.

Just took a look at the driver side rear suspension and found the root cause immediately ! It is the delta link bushing. Febi brand does not hold up like Scantech (used in passenger side).
Time to get a better bushing ....
Thank you for all yours help.

Do yourself a favor and do not buy ScanTech part again.
I guess that you only had a good luck with it.
All their parts are crap!
Uro parts too.
Febi is usually good aftermarket brand.

Febi is good ? The failed part is the Febi part. I just order a Volvo part, $212. There are not many choices out there. Either Volvo ($212), Lemforder ($200) and Febi ($34). Scantech does not make this control arm bushing.

Lemforder is oem...excellent part brand too.
I have Febi silent blocks(bushings) on front control arms for more than 2 years now....still no problem with them.
On Xm too.
