1999 S70 Replace Ignition Lock Cylinder and will not start

Post by daveruckel »

We had our ignition lock cylinder lock up. The keys were kind of messed up anyway so we bought a new lock cylinder with keys and antenna ring. Had the battery disconnected for about a week waiting for the parts. When I installed it all seemed to go well then we went to start it. It will turnover but will not start. I replaced the main relay thinking that may have something to do with it.
Any help would be great. We do not have a key-fob so I cannot do the lock and unlock thing I have seen with the fob.
I have checked for engine codes and there are none.
What am I missing???
Please help save the day!!!

Since you have a 1999, your key is chipped. I believe it needs to be programmed to the ignition switch by the Volvo dealer if it's a new ignition.
If it's not programmed, the car won't start.

^^This.

Any time a new key is introduced to the car, even if it is cut the same, the code from the key (I pray you saved the packaging) package has to be programmed into the system or the immobilizer won't let it run. The bummer is that it is pretty much a dealer only process and the car has to be physically at the dealership to get the programming done.

What would happen if I replaced the lock cylinder with one from a salvage yard

You would need the matching key to that lock cylinder of course, but that transponder wouldn't be compatible with the immobilizer. I'm not sure if the dealer can reprogram a used key, so you'll probably need a new one.

Still have the old key? Cut out the new transponder chip out of key and use old one instead (most just tape them inside steering column).

You can buy another antenna ring from the junkyard, put the old key in it, and bury it under the dashboard , connected. You might have a two crank start process to get the car to run,but my S70 is in this mode.
