Pulled the head from my '07 C70 T5 to find all 10 exhaust valves were bent. Discovered 3 intake valves with a pretty sizeable gap but not enough to contact the piston when closed. Serpentine belt frayed, somehow sucked into the timing cover, engine jumped time and bent all the exhaust valves. Ordered all new valves (may as well replace intake while in there!) and cleaned all the crud off the 12-year-old engine.

What probably helped me the most is investing in VIDA. The paint-by-numbers easy instructions for disassembling the engine was invaluable as it showed the locations of each bolt and nut I had to remove. If you don't have it, I HIGHLY recommend getting it. I've done core engine work before, but knowing where each of the fasteners were probably saved me a ton of time and spared me from a few migraines.

Ouch - sorry to hear that.

Good info on VIDA. I need to figure out how too do this. I only have Macs and no laptop, so need to decide on buying an older used one.

If I understand your post correctly, your 1996 850 has less than 65,000 miles on it?? is that true?
That is true.

Purchased her in April 2018 for $2200 cash with less than 55,000 miles and verified through CarFax.

1st owner only averaged just under 1500 miles per year from purchase in 1996 through 2013 when she only had slightly over 25,000 miles.

Second owner drove her a little harder and averaged a little over 8,200 miles per year. Oil changes like clockwork every 3000-5000 miles.
Most other things were neglected but at least the previous owner was diligent with oil changes.

I have a Windows 10 laptop and actually run a virtual machine just for VIDA. I tried to run a VM on my Linux computer but couldn't it to recognize the DiCE unit. It doesn't really need much to run so an old laptop will work just fine. Just needs to run Windows 7, really. Hooked it up to my wife's XC90 the day I got it and was blown away by the detail I got when running diagnostics. Can't wait to get my C70 back up and running so I can see if it tells me why the convertible top needs service.

I run VIDA natively on Windows 10. Took a little bit to make it work, but RickHaleParker's posts on here helped me get it going.

If you want it to get a ready to go VIDA setup, check out Dave Leach. He sells laptops with VIDA all set up and ready to run. https://www.facebook.com/DaveLeachVIDALaptops/

Otherwise, it can be run on Mac with a virtual machine or boot camp with Windows 7 (easiest to get going with VIDA). Of course you'll want a laptop to run VIDA for easier mobility, but you can run the software on a desktop without issue.

^^^ Thanks both!

Yeah, plugging into the car seems like the primary function, and I don't have a need for a mac laptop now, so that seems like the way to go. Do you guys keep it in the car for trips etc?

I haven't looked at doing that yet, I got it a month ago primarily to see what was wrong with my C70, ended up using it for the teardown diagrams to get down to the engine block. The primary use is vehicle diagnostics but the reference material is fantastic and doesn't require you to connect. Put in your VIN and it will pull up all the details for your particular vehicle.

Was driving out on my day off to look at and hopefully purchase a 96 850 GLT with only 120k miles and mint interior, but the owner sold it while I was driving up with no warning. The nerve of some people. Didn't even ask me if I wanted to make a better offer. I got to his house and he says, "oh sorry, I just sold it an hour ago." :x

In other news, have decided my windshield is far too pitted and chipped to be considered "safe" anymore, so I got estimates from various automotive glass replacement companies. Was pleasantly surprised this time around. Estimates ranged from $240 to $270 (safelite being the worst) including labor, factory original Pilkington glass or PGW aftermarket, and new trim/seals. When I got estimates 4 years ago, they were in the $600-800 range. :o These estimates were totally out of pocket, no insurance. Insurance told me they would just total the car instead of paying to replace the windshield.

I just have it on my everyday laptop that I'm using now, and I don't keep it in the car. I guess if you're on a long road trip, it may not be a bad idea! You never know when you might need it.

That blows... I had someone do that to me a couple months ago with an air compressor. He claimed he sent the address to the wrong guy after we agreed to meet once he got off work. When I messaged him to check in, he said "they just left with it". Some people are a-holes...

Swapped the stock amber taillights for some S90 taillights on the 940. Looks way nicer! Now I just need to clean up that bumper. But first comes the turbo/M46/LH 2.4 swap... that'll get started after I finish the S70!
