Passenger front axle
Passenger front axle
I replaced the passenger side front axle with an aftermarket axle after a few miles the axle stripped out at the splines going into transmission. the stripped splines were only inserted into the transmission a 1/4 of an inch. I replaced the aftermarket axle with a new volvo axle from the dealer and this time the splines were stripped out an 1/8 of an inch. I disassembled transmission and found no concerns with internal drive. what am I doing wrong? Am I ordering the wrong axle some how?

Your from the states, so your passenger side is the Right hand side which is the long drive shaft?. im fairly sure both drive shafts have the locking ring..not sure
i made that mistake, took the car to get a wheel alighnment and i was told the driveshaft wasnt secured into the gearbox. Did you hear a "click" when you pushed them in?...i used a hammer, a block of timber to protect the end and one solid tap to get it into the box, also pull on them and make sure they dont simply pull out.

Hi yes passenger (right) side axle. This is the longer axle and it does not have a clip on the end with the splines. There is a pressed on bearing from factory or manufacturer that mounts in a bracket on the engine. Because this bearing is pressed on and mounted in a certain location I have no effect on the amount of splines inserted into the transmission (from the end of the axle to the bearing location.)
Called Maple Hill Volvo again and had them recheck part number for my axle. They found the axle sent to me was the incorrect axle and the correct axle is on back order. So i checked O'reilly auto parts and found the beginning of the pressed on bearing to the end of the shaft is 20 3/16 which was too short also. Auto Zone axle shows the same measurement at 20 23/32 which I believe should fit correctly. Thanks to you guys and Maple Hill for finding my problem! Hopefully this Auto Zone axle is correct fitment this time around.

Nick since you are in Michigan maybe you are also close to Detroit Axle on 8 Mile Road. I've used their re manufactured axle for my XC70 with good result.

ah yes sorry only the short axel has the ring, the long axel is held in place by the bracket. Always a good idea to carefully check the part being removed to the new part being fitted, i was wanting to replace the long driveshaft on my 2001 (manual) with the driveshaft of my junked 2002 (auto) because the CV joints looked better, however the auto shaft was just a slightly longer length. Im surprised the dealership gave you the wrong part?
