We (my wife's car) use to own an 89 (around that year with square lights) 240 Wagon. It was in 1997 for only a few short months because we moved. Don't remember reading the manual . I think we used Mobil 1 ! My manager from Pepboys had sold me on Mobil 1 for awhile .

The 84 belong to a friend and he had injector problems one at a time. Began to cost him a few penny's at the Dealer each time. I think the Dealer told him and it may have been in the Manual not to use Shell. Does anyone have a 84 240 Manual?

What about Gasoline Use? My friend's Manual had either don't use or don't recommend Shell Gasoline. Wonder if it was one of those sheets/inserts that they put in after the Manual was printed? I remember him changing to Chevron and the injectors stopped fouling.

My 1989 740 GLT used Mobil 1 from 3000 miles until I traded it in. It was recommended not to use Synthetic oil before 3000 miles by Mobil back then. Bought the 740 new and serviced it at the dealer. The dealer did not push Synthetic oil but did offer it. The 740 and 240 used the same engine I think. Mine was turbo charged. None of the Volvos I have owned had a manual that said not to use Synthetic oil.

I've used Synthetic in every car since 1986 when Buick service recommended it for my 86 Park Avenue I bought new. I was so impressed with the difference it made, I have been sold on it since. To get the same oil as Mobil 1 was back then Amsoil still makes it. I switched several years ago to Redline and wish I had known about Redline throughout my ownership of my S80.

I never read don't use certain brands of gasoline. In the 80s unleaded Regular didn't have detergent, only Premium had detergent added. My mechanic at Volvo of Tampa recommended Chevron back then incidentally. June

You could use synthetic but there were many complaints about mixing synthetics , especially Shell and Mobil synthetics

I don't see the prohibition against Shell gasoline in this part of the Owner's Manual.

My 2006 has the Castrol logo on the cap too. Volvo likely paired up with them on the race circuit during that time - you know - cross marketing agreements and such.

Ok I'll bite/retract. Volvo engineering works directly with Castrol. Edge is their 'top shelf' product, it goes without saying most any vehicle will be better off with premium oils
