How do you say goodbye? - S70, not passing NYS emissions...P0444 P0133 Sporadic

Post by theWIFES_S70 »

Hi everyone, been working 70hr weeks lately so I've been too busy to get to all the repairs I'd like to get to on my S70. Nothing major, but you know, these cars like their maintenance! :)

The car is running great. I feel like I really know the car and appreciate everything it's done (and been) for us. Inspection ran out in October and I figured I wouldn't have a problem getting inspected, we've only had one or two check engine lights over the course of the year--the usual P0444 and a sporadic P0133. I haven't seen these lights since last April.

Anyhow, I go to my neighborhood shop and try to get inspected. Before inspection he checks to see if my I/Ms are ready. He shows me his scanner. Nothing is ready. He tells me not a problem, just drive hard for an hour and come back. Well, I drive two, stop and go traffic, push it to 70MPH, cruise at 40MPH, etc. Well, I come back. Nothing. I drive another couple of hours and come back, nothing. I do this every Saturday in October. Nothing. (It's now November...)m

I've read the threads of trying to get the car ready and it's not working for me. (Maybe because it's a MT?)

I drove three hours last night, to Brooklyn and back and had my scanner plugged in the entire time. I rescanned the computer every half hour or so and one time, two pending codes popped up, but then they disappeared and again, I/Ms aren't ready.

I'm trying to see if my brother wants this car, in NJ they don't do emissions through the OBDII. (Again, it's all stage zero.) But will need a new cat and manifold (and various fuel hoses--it does smell a little "fuel-ey"). Do I have any other options here?

It might be time to get rid of the car, no?

Not even close.

I just dropped a full exhaust off my 1998 parts car and have a manifold for you too by December or so.
Well, I drive two, stop and go traffic, push it to 70MPH, cruise at 40MPH, etc.
Make sure AC is turned off, no defrost, don’t exceed 60nmph, and keep throttle between 1/4 and 3/4

If no monitors are going ready there is some deeper problem, engine, cat and misfire should go ready in a few minutes.

Cat and Evap are the ones but you can pass with them not ready in NYS and I think NYC

I hear you on the 70 hours a week, been there done that.
The problems are not that hard to fix, for you it is the time.

You might try the easy stuff below before you give up and move on.

EFI-541 (P0444) Canister purge (CP) valve, signal
Condition
Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) EFI-541 (Canister purge (CP) valve, signal) is stored if the engine control module (ECM) registers a fault in the canister purge (CP) valve coil or cables after 5 seconds.

Substitute value
  • 2-heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) control disabled
the electrical test of the front heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) is disabled
the electrical test of the rear heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) is disabled
the pulsed secondary air injection system (PAIR) test is disabled
the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) test is disabled
the three-way catalytic converter (TWC) test is disabled
    leak diagnostic disabled
    fuel shut-off conditions changed.

Possible source
Signal too high:
  • short-circuit to supply voltage in signal cable
    defective canister purge (CP) valve.
Signal too low:
  • Chort-circuit to ground in signal cable
Signal missing:
  • Defective fuse 11B/5 (1998-) (Small #5 under the hood )
Open-circuit in signal- or power cable
    Defective canister purge (CP) valve
Fault symptoms
  • may result in poor performance
    may result in fuel odor
    may result in uneven idling.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EFI-435 (P0133) Front heated oxygen sensor (HO2S). Too slow

Condition
The engine control module (ECM) continuously monitors the time (period 3.3 seconds) it takes for the HO2S to switch from rich to lean and back to rich again. If this time is too long, the engine control module (ECM) interprets this as a fault in the front heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) and diagnostic trouble code (DTC) EFI-435 is stored.

Substitute value
twin heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) control disabled
pulsed secondary air injection (PAIR) diagnostic disabled.

Possible source
  • uneven compression
air leakage in the intake system
air leakage in the exhaust system
    faulty fuel pressure
defective front heated oxygen sensor (HO2S).
Fault symptoms
may result in poor performance.

Hi all, thanks for the responses. The slow check engine light though? (I swear maybe twice this year, maybe once or twice last year--after it was triggering on every week four years ago?) Would that all point to something a miss with the computer of the engine?

I'm willing to pay!!! :)

So I'm guessing, consensus is to drive the car to my moms every week or so to keep the fluids moving and tackle this when the weather is warmer? :)

Sometimes, the problem looks big but is a small issues.

In my case, my car had a CEL as well intermittently going and coming with p0442 small evap leak error. This past week came time to get a smog check. checked all the hoses, no problems. The Canister Purge valve was recently changes 15K miles back and vent valve was fine as well. When I smoked the EVAP system, the canister smoked like a wet sock in my hand.. evidently the canister had cracked.. signs of aging I guess. Changed the charcoal canister and drove 75 miles and got all the monitors ready and passed with flying colors.!

At least check fuse 11B/5, It will only take 60 seconds.

Canister purge valve is Volvo part number 9135444.

There is a pdf on the Readiness Code problem with S70's in this link. You should reset the codes and just drive for a bit and go back to the tech and asked him if he know how to bypass that portion of the test.

I will check this fuse when I get home from work!

And I will check that purge valve. I believe my shop swapped it out when I first bought the car (which was like 5 years ago). Who knows what part they used... Fingers crossed!!

Hang in there! It might be just an easy thing. New cars mean lots of dollars or new problems.

Used cars are high now. There is a shortage, they cut production back in the 2008 recession.
