2.0T ECU on 2.3T

Post by 850T5Ritalia »

Hi all,

I bought this Italian spec 850 T-5R and was told by the owner that, because it is an Italian market car it has a 2.0T(b5204t) obviously.. BUT when I went through the service book I noticed somewhere it said that the engine was replaced. So I went to check the code on the engine and it says: B5234T4. According to Wikipedia this is the 850R engine? The engine swap was done in the Netherlands were the 850R is a ‘96 or ‘97 car like almost everywhere else I assume. This engine is supposed to run 250hp according to the specs on Wikipedia. Where it doesn’t feel that quick to me and only builds 7psi of boost I checked the ECU and it seems that it still has the 2.0t ECU installed.. code 0 261 200 548.

I suspect this to be the reason it doesn’t make good power? (Does the 2.0T make such low boost?) I also think they didn’t swap over the turbo that belongs to the B5234T4 but rather placed the B5204T turbo back since it has the 13G fitted

Also I can’t really find reliable information on which ECU this B5234T4 engine is suppose to run. Is it the 4.3 or 4.4 that runs the B5234T4? I’ve read stories that no 850R has the 4.4 originally but also that some might use it..

I of course want to use the full potential of the B5234T4. Installing a 16t and the correct ECU would do that I think. Just like to know which ECU to look for.

Thanks!🙏🏼

That sounds like exactly what you need to do... find a 2.3 HPT ECU (Motronic 4.4 is what you'd probably want) and install a 16t. If the 2.0 originally had a 13g, it likely only ran at around 7 PSI of boost.

Thanks for answering. When installing a 4.4 on my ‘95 car I need to do some modifications to use the A/C right?

These are all M4.4 ECMs and all these cars have the B5234T4.

0 261 203 927 – 96 850 T5 Automatic 2.3T - TD04HL-15g turbo.

0 261 204 611 – 98 SV70R 2.3T - TD04HL-18T turbo.
0 261 204 612 – 98 SV70R 2.3T - TD04HL-18T turbo.

0 261 204 455 – 98 V70R Automatic 2.3T - TD04HL-18T turbo.

0 261 204 606 – 98 V70R AWD Automatic 2.3T TD04HL-18T turbo.

You can find the 606 binary file (BIN) at M44 Wiki or one of the binary mirrors.

All the M4.4 hardware is the same the difference is the software. You could flash the BIN you need to any M4.4 hardware.

Very helpfull information! Thanks!

I found an 4.4.1 from a 960 2.5i for a good price. The code is: 0 261 203 657

I can flash the BIN on this ECU and do the 4.4 conversion to not frick my AC and be good? (Does it matter if this ECU came from a AUTOMATIC??)
My '95 car doesnt have a OBD2 port. Can I still use the led light diagnose system in the engine bay? And how does the lag of the OBD port trouble me when I want to data log etc?

Thanks

Yes, 960 ECUs are different. You need an 850 or S/V/C70 ECU.

I believe so, but I want to say there are software patches. Search for M4.4 conversion on Volvospeed, lots of info on that over there.
