WInter weather solution - cardboard garage

Post by volvolugnut »

Don't have a garage and wintery weather coming with snow or sleet? Use the cardboard garage! Low cost, easy and recyclable.
1. Find large sheet of cardboard from a used box.
2. Turn on the wipers and cycle the ignition switch to position the wipers at the top of windshield. Works best if applied to a dry windshield.
3. Place cardboard under wipers.
4. Remove before turning ignition switch to on. When it gets wet or icy, just recycle.

Or buy some cheap rubber mat. It is much better than cardboard, which only lasts 1-2 times.

This thread reminds me of one of the things I disliked about my 1997 jetta.

The door lock mechanism was really susceptible to freezing solid. Water would get in that lock and just bind the whole thing up. Never had an issue with this only any other car I've owned including some 80s generation VWs.
My car was a base model TDI (Diesel) and it only had a key lock on the driver's side so I didn't have the option to just walk to the other side of the car.

Why didn't I just use the key fob to unlock it? I never used the key fob as I didn't like carrying around that big bulky thing. still don't.
I don't know what it was about that particular lock design.. Did not work well in winter.

The Bavarian Money Waster in our fleet has a cool feature, wiper parking

If you leave the wipers up and shut off the ignition, they don’t reactivate when you restart the car.

That way, you don’t have to unstick the wipers from ice, you let the defrost do that while you shovel the car off/out.

Cycling the wiper switch restores wiper function

This reminded me of something......
For whatever reason the V70's left side wiper bit the dust. I replaced it and a friend noticed my blades didn't match.

I told him that Volvo's have a feature whereby you can select only the driver's wiper if that's all that's needed.
He believed me....for a while.
Next thing I knew he was angry with me for pulling his leg.

Ask her what colour she wants, paint the cardboard.

Same price.
