2003 C70 A/C bypass

Post by mlanski » Sat Dec 14, 2019 10:29 am

New member here.

I'm trying to bypass the A/C compressor on a 2003 C70 2.3l, until I can replace it in the summer. I used a DAYCO 5060490 / 6PK1245, and it fits great. When I started the car the alternator and coolant lights came on.

I read in one of the other threads on the site that if you change the direction of the rotation on the alternator, it won't charge. Is this the case for the C70 as well? Will bypassing the A/C compressor throw the coolant light on too?

Any other suggestions on how to do the bypass?

Thanks!

From 1999 on Volvo uses alternator pulleys with a clutch, so they only operate when turned one way. The alternator itself will make current either rotation , so a solid pulley would solve the bypass problem. I don’t think we’ve found one that fits here yet.

Rare insight flash....has anyone tried putting the -1998 solid pulley on a 1999- on for this trick?

The coolant light is something else

Coolant light cable to the float probably got disconnected when working on the SERP belt. Lift the header tank carefully and check the cable has not been broken or disconnected at the connector under it.

Not sure if youre still looking for insight on this, but on my 99 s70 I removed the compressor and replaced it with a bracket and pulley setup. It cost me as much as a used ac compressor would cost, so I don't think I came out ahead. I don't know how different the c70 is, but I'd suggest fixing the AC or putting on a used compressor.

Not sure where you live, but I've had alot of window fogging issues with the cold and wet weather since removing the AC (some of that might be a heater core leak though).

Here is the link to my thread that I put the part numbers on and other member provided some helpful feedback.

I’m pretty sure I’ve got a good 1999 compressor and I definitely have a core that is dead if you go the new route.

I almost went used on the last pass as I though I had only months of car life left....that was 70k miles ago
