Calling all ETM experts

Post by highmiles »

2001 S60 T5 manual transmission that I am rebuilding, for a more in depth background, see here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=91919

As noted in that thread, is was predicted the ETM's life would be short, and that appears to be the case.

There are several codes, I believe the pertinent one is ECM-902A

I have pulled the ETM, it is a yellow label with a 2003 date code, likely that it was replaced early on I am guessing.

I tested the car harness and found 12v at the green wire, so I believe the ETM is getting the power it needs.

I hooked up the ETM to a battery (green wire positive, brown negative) and get what seems to be an abnormal test run. See the video.

I took voltages across the remaining connectors, here are the results:
1=pink
2=yellow/green
3=red/blue
4=violet
5=brown (ground)
6=green (12v in)

1-3 = 0 volts
1-4 = 1.164 volts
2-3 = 0 volts
2-4 = 1.922 volts

I surmise that the 0 volt readings indicate a break in an internal circuit.

Head to the junkyard? If I understand the FCP Euro article I can use any ETM from a turbo car, I am sure there is some age cut off, but that indicates 1999-2012 at least?
Take this ETM apart and upgrade with contact less? But wouldn't be surprised if that was not the issue.

Happy to run additional tests!

Thanks! John

Call off the hounds!

Back to mechanics, or electrics 101 for me.

I moved on to sorting some of the under hood electrical wiring while I waited for the next bright idea and in the process found... did you guess it???... the wire for the large ground at the front of the motor was a bit loose.

Could it be? Of course, all back together and running again, no codes! Well, I have a bad blinker bulb...

Back to the garage!

Please tell us (meaning ME) where this ground wire is located. It's raining torrentially now so I can't lift the hood.

It’s the main engine ground, I think under the starter. Big blue battery cable off the B- post.

Sean did his head job, started up and ran fine, then popped a ETS light in his 1999.

Fixed with a new blue negative terminal lug.

Good grounds, very important.
