V50 clunking noise from front left suspension

Post by R6000CH »

Hello all, hope you can help?! My 2008 V50 D5 has developed an annoying rattle/clunking noise when driving over uneven road at low speed. On higher speed smooth roads, you can't hear it.
My local mechanic has tried replacing roll bar links, no luck. Checked the wishbones (undamaged) shocks are fine, lower arm, rear bush minimal movement, subframe bush, steering rack all fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Richard

No answers?
I'm only on my 4th Volvo (had as many Audis, twice as many VWs, and 3 Mercedes, plus American and Japanese and French) but I've seen reference to the top-strut mount failing early on most Volvos.
Usually it gets squishy, making the top-end loose.
Rarely the rubber gets really hard.
But both failures result in noises (clunks) over bumps.
I had a clunk on bumps with my V70, but it was just the common sway-bar linkage, which you've already checked.

Hope this is already solved.

I had the same noise, disassembled the strut assembly and found it was the strut mount. Rubber was ripped around the center area. This was causing the spring to hit the body on my S40. This was after I replaced the ball joints, sway bar end links, tie rod ends, both springs ( one was broken) and struts.

Just replaced some sway ends on our 07 S40. There were clunks that sounded like sway end troubles--I'm used to the clunks from working on P80s for almost ten years. But the clunk isn't gone... Guess I'll try to replace the spring seats!!!

Okay folks, just went through a strut job on my S40 yesterday.

My spring seats completely fell apart so they were definitely making noise. If I had to describe the noise, it was a "metalic rattle." I couldn't really feel it in my driving. Will post about the spring seats in a separate thread.

I think my clunks are coming from the Mevotech control arms I installed over two years ago. (I know, I know...)
