2003 XC70 Blown Head Gasket Symptoms

Post by lous_97_850 » Wed Jan 08, 2020 6:33 pm

My wife's 03 XC70 (137,00 miles) had the top hose connector on the radiator break. She stopped driving when she noticed a low coolant level alarm. I am not sure if the engine overheated.
Towed the vehicle home, got radiator and hoses from FCP and replaced. Subsequently went to have emissions done and it failed due to miss fire codes (300, 302, etc). CEL was on after leaving the emissions center. I also got a low coolant level message.

I went home changed out the coil packs associated with the OBD codes, reset the codes, and checked coolant tank which was near the low mark and also noticed coolant stain on outside of tank. I refilled coolant tank, then drove to a friends and back (10 miles). At no time did the temp gauge get above the normal level.

When I got home I checked the coolant level which was above the high mark and the top hose was expanded. I waited for the engine to cool and released the pressure on the coolant system. The next time I started the car it started a little rough and the misfire codes came back. After starting, the car idles smoothly, and does not steam from the exhaust.
I performed a compression check of the cylinders after warming up the engine. Removed all plugs of which several looked possibly washed (I had cleaned them up when changing the coil packs) and had the following readings:
140, 140, 140, 150, 160

Are the symptoms that I am having indicative of a blown head gasket?
If not blown head gasket, what would cause the coolant system to become over pressurized (I also swapped out the coolant reservoir cap)?
Could a bad thermostat cause the over pressurization?

I replaced the head gasket on my 97 850, are the procedures the same for an 03 XC70?
Does anyone have up to date procedures for head gasket replacement?

The car is in good condition with all new suspension, brakes, hubs, and would hate to have to scrap it.

Thanks for y'all advice,

Lou

After my daughter's 07 C70 2.5T blew the upper hose assembly it had a blown head gasket. The car had your exact symptoms, misfire codes, over pressure in coolant system, no steam out exhaust, no coolant in oil. But the head gasket had blown and failed the combustion gas test in the coolant system. You need to perform this test as your next step. June

Should I just skip the combustion gas test and go straight to work on the head gasket?
What else could cause these symptoms?

No, always verify a problem 100% when possible. So for your piece of mind do the test. You can rent the apparatus at any auto parts store and usually the only cost once returning the apparatus is the cost of the solution.

The older 5 cylinder engines seem to be more likely to burn valves whereas the mid thousands seem more prone to pop head gaskets. That's just from my observation reading endless posts on here.

When I think about it I worry my T6 will do one or the other, though I rarely see a 6 cylinder getting a head gasket job or dying of burning a valve. June

I will rent the tester and check to see if exhaust gases in coolant.
Thanks

June,
Performed the combustion gas leak test and the fluid turned from blue to yellow which shows that the combustion gases are getting into the cooling system.
I guess next step it to remove the head. I have older procedures on performing head gasket replacement on earlier version of the engine (850). I imagine the procedures are mostly the same except for dealing with the variable timing and the camshafts. Also last time I did this on the 850 it did not have turbo.
