One of my favorite daughter /Volvo quotes

“Volvo’s have room for a guy and a couple of spares” I still haven’t figured out why needs more than one spare tire.

I’m cruising Brown, Worcester, Lexington, Cambridge on Wednesday. Always have 10 minutes to meet an MVS person. I’ll pm you my cell , in 10 minutes I’m sure we can diagnose where the noise is coming from.

I would guess the alternator or the water pump. It probably is not the AC compressor because of winter.
The water pump can get ugly because you might leak all coolant. If the serpentine belt is off and the noise is still there, it is the water pump or one of the timing belt pulleys. if the noise is gone, it is one of the above (alternator, power steering pump, serpentine belt pulley).

The hose test made it clear it was the PS pump, you could actually hear the growling get louder when the cap came off the reservoir.

If I remember right, Katie used a Samsung phone to record that engine noise - the clarity was really good.

Could on acceleration mean something flexing due to a worn mount?

I can't thank you enough for stopping by and helping me diagnose! It was so kind of you to offer your knowledge and time. I will keep you guys posted once I finally get the work done to confirm whether it was power steering pump or not. You could definitely hear the noise increase with the cap off though.
