PSA : P80 upper radiator hose chafe warning (1994-1998) 1335433

Just got back from a rescue mission on a engine overheat.

The upper hose had chafed on the power steering hose crimp and blown on the bottom. This is a chafe point that you can’t see.

Pics to come. It might only be an issue on the -1998 since the 1999- PS pump changes

The only way that happens is something is wrong with hose fitment or failed engine mounts. Otherwise should not be near the steering hose.

May not be a problem with all original parts, but still a good warning. If you install a hose (or any other part), check for potential interference and chaffing. My rule of thumb for mobile power equipment manufacture was 1 inch of clearance between parts that may move independently. We often used rubber belting, like the outer hose shown here, to protect hoses that were in contact with unavoidable edges.

Here’s a view from another P80 , a 1998

The hose clearance is tight so any settlingof the hose will chew this up. A motor mount shouldn’t change the relative position since both hose and ps line connect on the block.

FYI - the referenced part number for the upper radiator hose fits all P80s from 1994-2000 per the FCP site
