So anyone have suggestions for actual brand+type besides "the orange stuff"? Do I want IAT or OAT or HOAT or what? Silicates or no? Does it matter if it's PG or EG? etc. My book doesn't tell me anything.

I'm on another continent so I can't recommend anything. Except either get Volvo's since that's what you probably have or get anything that says on the label it's ok for aluminum engines and replace it all. Personally I bought the cheapest ready mix that was available in my area and flushed the old one out.

Sorry - Orange stuff is DEXCOOL which is in any auto store or big box (ugh) store with an auto section.
If you are in a climate which is only dipping to 32F or so, water is fine for top off

Coolant contains a lot of additives, like corrosion inhibitors and dispersants. Plain water or even old, degraded coolant will eventually kill engine. Of course, this is a very slow process that takes years.

OK that looks to be a with-silica type. Says it's "bright blue" so I guess it's HOAT too? (They don't say). Doesn't look like this is popular here, I'll have to call around.
Well I'm assuming that a lot of the brands are probably world-wide for the most part. All I have to do is call the local shops and ask if they have it, the worst that can happen is they say no.
The only places that stock the official stuff are the dealers. They're going to hit me for $35/gal after tax but it looks like I might not have a choice if I can't find anything else.
Dexcool and Pentosin make multiple different types of coolant/antifreeze though, can you be more specific about which one to use?
Yeah I'm only concerned with getting to the store and back whereupon I'll mix it properly. I'm not going to run it that way permanently.

Pento Frost NF is made by Pentosin, I believe Pentonsin manufactures the coolant for Volvo branded bottles.
Yes it's a nice blue color, can't be mistaken for any other color.

Same here, and it's concentrate which means you will add another gallon of distilled water ($2 from Walmart Pharmacy) and you have all the needed coolant for under $25USD and you know it's the right type for your car. While there, I would never use tap water in these engines, not even to 'flush' them with that garden hose. In many areas the tap water has high amounts of calcium carbonate dissolved in it which only waits to deposit inside the engine and block coolant passages - remember that the heater core inner tubes are very thin.

Surprisingly little is actually. Or if they are they sell completely different products on different continents. And especially if you like me buy the chains own brand product with no idea who's actually making it.
