So I bought my first Volvo two weeks ago – needed the car just to go around town and this 2005 S60 5T with 150k mls looked so good and drove like a charm. It seemed to be very well taken care of.
Unfortunately, after a few days I noticed the transmission slipping between second and third year, engine revved up a bit. So I brought it to a local shop specialized on Swedish cars to get an estimate.
Apart from a few things that I expected, they quoted me 2.5 K just to replace the valve body of the tranny.
I can still drive around town, but would still like to have it fixed. But not for 2.5 K.
Given the fact that the diagnosis valve body had a "most likely" attached to it, I think that replacing the transmission might be a good idea.
So I am looking around and I see used transmissions with and without warranty, price ranging from $300 to $1000 plus estimated nine hours of labor.
It seems that replacing the transmission comes with the need to reprogram it. My question:
Am I on the right track and who can do the reprogramming?

What about doing the drain & fill and "Gibbons" flush and see if it drastically improves?

Check B4 servo cap. Replacement kit 30751262 is about $30.
You may also take out the washer marked with red 2 on the pic:

B4 band wears out and for some reason AW55 in Volvo can't really compensate it. Best fix would be using a longer pin, but I was not able to find where that pin can be bought.

Seems that for this, the transmission needs to be taken apart, right?
I am not a do-it-yourself guy (anymore), have to find a mechanic to do that.
So I am also more looking for a solution to swap out several parts that might be the problem instead of going bit by bit.

No, B4 serve cap is accessible from under the car. You need to take off splash guard and left wheel to access it.
You do not need to reprogram transmission. The only thing is needed is adaptation reset - a perfect job for those Chinese DiCE clones (scanner) under $100 and "community" edition of VIDA (software).

Obviously, my car now has a PO780 error code that refers to Transmission Shift Malfunction, a shift solenoid malfunction.
I am still looking for a decent tranny repair shop close to me, wasn't even able to get a second opinion. But I'll have the shop around my corner drain and refill to recommended levels.
Here is my question in case the more expensive repairs are recommendable (like valve body replacement or tranny replacement):
Obviously, there is a need to reprogram the transmission after repair or swap.
Who can do that, what's the cost, and does the car have to be towed to a repair shop who can do it?
