Mike

The white pin is for alignment

And the sound as the plastic ring seats is normal

The seating in the hole comment is for the end of the coil spring that engages the water pump

If the spring isn’t seated it will make an annoying clicking sound with the engine at idle (ask me how I know)

Note at 10 years the thermostat typically fails, I recommend that you think about that next

And keep us posted on the outcome

Take care

Paul

Everything back together and she fired right up. Ran it at 2k rpm in park until water temp hit 199 and then it suddenly went down fast to 175 and then back up to 195 and pretty much hovered around that temp. Using iCarsoft OBD scanner to check readings. Still not sure why cyl 1 had all that carbon. Hope those INA parts from Fcpeuro hold up for a while.

I’ll write more tomorrow ... glad it’s running and don’t see oil in coolant and oil is clean.

Mike,

That is great news

Congratulations!!!!!!

From the Land Rover Manual

Thermostat Wax element
Starts to open 90° C (194 F)
Fully open 100° C (210 F)

Based on your data I think that your Thermostat is fine.

Don't worry about INA they are a high quality vendor.

I use their parts without hesitation.

You should think about posting to the $10,000 S80 Challenge

I don't know how much you paid for your S80 but I suspect that you could meet the goals of the Challenge

Here is the challenge

1. Buy a S80 sedan
2. Fix everything that ails it, including preventative maintenance for any common failures
3. Drive it for 10 years or 100,000 miles (My son will drive the car)
4. Keep track of purchase price and all maintenance (cost of parts only, labor is free)
5. Do it for $10,000 or less

Thanks

Paul

Mike

I created the challenge to encourage people just like you to buy a safe and reliable car

In my case I am including the purchase price in the $10,000

However if you were to post the cost of the repair that you just did it would be appropriate

Part of the point of the challenge is that cost can be kept down if you do the work yourself

As you just proved with your S80 3.2

Take care

Paul

Hmmmm...I’m getting a lot of pinging just off idle when going from stop and at low rpm high load situations. Interesting...
