2005 XC70 Smell of gas (New to Volvo's)

Check aluminum vent pipe that goes to fuel filler neck, it corrodes and develops holes:

These photos are taken on 2005 XC70 with exact same symptom. The guy cut the worn part of the pipe and replaced it with an oil-resistant rubber hose.

The EVAP hose runs to the filler/breather tube. It might be tap to more then one point on the tank. The instructions say to lower the tank. I would look it over real carefully and make sure there is no way to fish a new hose in before dropping the tank.

So, I dropped the vehicle off at a shop for a look and they did a smoke test which confirmed that we have some sort of leak coming from the top of the tank. They quoted about 7 hours of labor to drop the tank and see what the issue is.

Options? I'm quite handy with a wrench but not sure what all may be involved. I am aware of the recall issues and I've seen the videos of some sort of access panel on some models to the fuel pump from inside the vehicle.

Buy your own smoke machine, smoke the car, observe from where it is leaking. You probably don't need to drop the full tank, just lower subframe at one corner.

EVAP canister can be seen by dropping exhaust and removing heat shield above it.

Here is a guide for repairing a fuel vent leak without dropping the tank on a 1998 S70.
Might be inspiration for the task before W.C. Zimmerman.

Unfortunately, with an XC, the P80 guide won’t cover dropping the subframeamd drivetrain necessary to drop the tank fully. Partial drop hopefully will let you access the leak

Before you do anything else, take the rear seat out and get access to the top. My brother's V70 leaked gas around the fuel pump access and it was an easy fix.

So, my initial plan is to pull up the back seat and take a look through the portals for any leaks. I also plan to take a look and see if removing the exhaust and heat shield will reveal anything for the evap system. Does anyone have a picture of the evap canister so I know what I'm looking for? Then, if that doesn't reveal anything, I plan to see if I can lower the tank just enough to get a little more clearance between the underbody and the top of the tank. I figure between these 3 things, I should be able to find what's leaking.
