The latch lock has two parts the first is to be able to unlock the mechanism. This can be done by either the key in the back (Mechanical) or the fob or release button on the driver side door. This is electrical through a solenoid on top of the latch.

Them to open the hatch you can either depress the paddle under the outside handle n the middle above the license plate or with a handle inside the door also kind of in the middle under the window.
Either one of these two actions then press on a plate below them. My question is if the unlatching is then done mechanical or electrical?

If you can't get the tailgate open, you can crawl in the back and release the latch receiver loop from the body with a large (T45?) torx, two bolts. Then open it up, remove the tailgate trim and remove the latch to replace it.
