1999 V70 T5 M56 ELIZABETH No crank Problem [9472949 clutch switch ]

Loaned my car to a friend in need for a week and he called me last night with a no crank problem

Dash lights come on, clink of relays, no cranking

I an 8 minute call I...

Guided him to front, opened kidney fusebox
To rear, opened my in-car tools, opened the creamchesse container and retrieved my pre-made remote starter bypass wire
Hooked it into white terminal
Confirmed Neutral
Touched to battery

Vroom!!!

We are debating if it has an ignition switch, clutch switch, or perhaps starter relay issue.

My guess is ignition switch. Awaiting discussion!

I think Professor Volvo is on point.

Follow up. Friend reports he has to trigger starter with the white terminal while also holding key in POS III, crank position

I hAve previously started car with the remote terminal in POS II with no problem

I’m guessing this points to an ignition switch problem. Current one, 7 years, 110k miles

Heh heh.

Get your thinking caps out on this one.

Car energizes but does not crank in pos III

If we jump to the remote bypass terminal (RBT) under hood, car cranks but does not start

If we jump RBT, AND turn key to pos III, CAR starts

......and......

If we leave a remote starter switch connected to the RBT, BUT DONT ACTIVATE IT, the car starts in key position III.

This one should be fun.

Sounds fun but I'd leave my thinking cap in the closet for a bit and replace the switch. Gasp(!) throw a part at it. Bad ignition switch is well known to cause bizarre electrical behaviors.

Don't you have a good switch from another car you can test with?

Exactly. Parts darts are called for here. I think on the 1999 there is both electrical connection and logic going on in the starter circuit. The starter relay actually gets it trigger from the 2/76 lock control module, which gets the start command from the ECU.
