"GIMME GIMME GIMME A VOLVO 850"

We could have littered this week's missive with all sorts of hackneyed Swedish puns involving Abba, flat-pack furniture and fermented herring. But the fact is the Volvo 850 is a bit of a living legend — not to mention, a bargain — and we don't reckon there's any need for us to resort to such things to prove it to you. So we're absolutely, definitely not going to do that. OK? Good.

For starters, the 850 is indeed a bargain. Y’see, classic Volvos are cool. And as such, prices of anything clean and tidy from the era of the 740/760 or beforehand are starting to climb.

Happily, the same can’t be said for the 850, primarily because it’s too new, but also because it – unlike any large Volvo which came before it – is front-wheel drive.
