Familiar "burning engine" smell returns

Yea that might do it! The machine shop got the bulk of mine clean. They also made it true( They said it was only off 5/1000in? I think?) Then I reseated the valves myself.

Don't forget to recheck valves clearance after lapping.

I'm going after the whole thing, just out of curiosity (man should do at least one engine in his life)

Wow yea it’s nice to see the bottom end like that. This was my first cylinder head and I wanted to know it would run when I got it back together. Messing with the bottom end would of created too many variables for me. Yes I rechecked valve clearance. I was able to swap most of them around, I think I only had to buy 3 new tappets.
