Cams Identification Topic is solved

07 xc70 2.5 dual cvvt
Engine had low compression. Rolled engine by hand to set "in time", used cam lock down tool (noticed notches in back side of cams NOT parallel to "head seam") Removed head. Sent to machine shop for valve job... When I get my head/cams/cam cover back... Cams lock tool is off cams, as well as "cam gears" without markings......

My main question is, are the 2 cams identicle? The only different markings I found on the cams, was one is stamped (.3) the other is (.5). Also, what about the notches on the back side of the cams (where you install cam lock tool)? Why werent the notches parallel to "head seam"?

I fully understand the process of "resetting timing" (I've completed a 2001 V70 T5 head R&R)... But that was with my cam gears still on cams with locking tool assembled.

Any help is much appreciated!!

What is exactly the problem? Did they take camshafts out, gears and hubs off, so you can't figure out which camshaft is which?

Correct. I cannot positively identify correct cam shaft location. If I could Identify between exhaust & intake cam, I could proceed with head install & timing set-up.

I have both cams out of a 1999 RN NA engine - if pictures would help I could send/post/send by pigeon.

Look closely for a paint swatch - red and blue. I think I know which is which but you should research to be sure.

Also, look real closely on the rear end for an I and E in punch marked dot matrix format

Lobes on intake are about 42 mm, about 43 on exhaust. I think you can't mess them with the lock tool installed, the notches would not fit slots in camshafts unless they are properly placed.

Great info... THANKS! I had thought about the notches & cam lock tool...but keep running into info & videos that have notches being parallel to head seam... I'm guessing this doesn't hold true for my motor? I think it's a 5254T...

Can't tell you how wonderful those part numbers were!! Easily identifiable on "notch" side of cams where part numbers are located!

I have a similar question. I'm currently rebuilding a 2003 V70 T5 head (B5234T3) and, foolishly, I removed both sprockets from the cams when I was uninstalling the cams and cam cover. I only have exhaust VVT so I can clearly differentiate between those Intake and Exhaust. My confusion comes in when I have to reinstall the cams and sprockets. I no longer know which way to rotate the cams to match up the cams and crank to find TDC. I'm happy to answer any questions i just really need advice!
