I tool my car to have a noise looked at, it was the rear wheel bearing, and the technician tells me that my transmission pan is leaking. It needs a reseal (new gasket) and I should probably do the filter and fluids at the same time. OK, that doesn't sound unreasonable as the last time I replaced those items was back in 2015. So it's been a while. Then he tells me the price. $552. What! Does this sound anywhere close to the ballpark?
I looked in my records and I purchased a gasket and filter from FCP for $87 back in 2015. Even if the fluid is $100, how is there over $350 in labor here? I am torn because I have been going to this independent mechanic for years and years and they do great work, but this pricing is killing me.
Incidentally, they verified the rear right wheel bearing was making the noise I took it in for. They wanted $600 to replace it! I looked online and a Moog or Timkin bearing is $160. A OEM Volvo is $250. Again, where's all the labor coming from!? I chose to order the part and do this one myself. They charged me $60 for the diagnostic.
Anyway, sorry to go on so long. Has anyone had a tranny service done recently and what was the cost? I'm curious now.

You guys are up to $150 an hour in Silicon Valley because people keep Googling everything.
3 hours for those jobs is pretty reasonable - and doing it yourself will save you lots of chai latte dollars, Song.

Unless the AWD system changes the trans setup considerably it's a pretty straight forward job. Changed the gasket, filter and installed a Transgo shift kit besides flushing the entire system using the transmission cooler line method. You can piece together videos on Youtube for all the work aforementioned. I may have those on a post somewhere.
The shifts are snappy without any jointing and passing is instantaneous. Scared myself and the guy next to me as I was about to miss the freeway split on the right and having just enough room WOT the lane change. Lighting quick. Didn't know the T6 and Transgo can make the car do that.

If you need to have someone do the work one of these two shops should be able to provide an estimate.

You are being taken for a ride if it is the transmission oil pan that is leaking. As posted, filter from a site sponsor, is about $20 plus shipping. Fluid is $30-40 or so at Wal-Mart or a chain store.
It is a GM 4T65E transmission and uses a GM transmission filter and gasket - it is GM spec'd fluid. No magic - no special sauce.
With a lift I could do it in under an hour. It is a straight shot.
If you are not able to handle it, try a transmission shop you trust or a local shop. I would say $350 tops.

Haha, I didn't even think of doing that. Honestly, it's a time thing now. I know I can do the job (I did it before) and I know the parts are not more than $100 tops.
At the end of the day, I had it done because I have other things to deal with.
I did get the itemized bill and they used a lot of stuff in this service. Here's all the parts.
1. Castrol Trans fluid 7.9qts at $9.82 a quart. So $77.58
2. AT Filter kit $55.70
3. Tranny flush kit $14.95
4. Gasket kit $16.95
5. Parts cleaner $11.95
Now for the labor.
1. Tranny service $300
2. Diagnosis $80
3. Cleaning $60
The other costs were related to other things.
So that's $177.13 in parts and $440 in labor!
Let that be a lesson folks, if you have the time and ability, do your own maintenance!
This weekend, I get to change a wheel bearing. Doing that myself will save me $500.

Thanks for this post. I did the service myself 5 years ago and recall it was messy but not hard.MoVolvos wrote: ↑12 Mar 2020, 20:33According to FCP, eEuroparts & IPD my 03S80T6 & your 04XC90T6 have the same GM 4 speed transmission.songzunhuang wrote: ↑11 Mar 2020, 23:51

I've rebuilt quite a few cars so my limiting factor now is time. I have several old cars to contend with that all seem to need attention.
Hadn't heard of the Transgo. Maybe I'll look into that.

End of the day I had the shop do the tranny service. It's a messy job and I didn't want to deal with it.
I'm taking on the wheel bearing this weekend. I'll save $500 doing it myself.
