Yes, they're completely different engines. Well, same but different. The -1998 "N" and 1999+ "RN" use different designs for the cams, among other things, being that the -'98 engines did not use VVT.

Ah, I see. I certainly figured the exhaust cams would be different but wasn't sure about the intake. It'll be a lot harder then to find one at a junkyard, all the more reason to leave mine in there!

Thanks

Mostly the same I believe, pretty sure the rods are slightly bigger in the RN. Then the ancillary differences like the oil cooler (and pan), different accessories, etc. of course.

Check the classifieds here and on Swedespeed, sometimes people are parting out these cars. You can use a cam from a 1999-2004 2.3 or 2.4 turbo with single exhaust VVT. I'm pretty sure the LPT and HPT use the same cams, but I can't confirm this.

Interesting that the 2.5 S80 is on the list... I didn't know Volvo offered a 2.5 in MY 2003. Maybe that was for other markets. Then the later B5254T2 used from '04 on was dual VVT, so that's definitely not compatible.
That answers the question of LPT vs. HPT though, seems that they're the same PN. Good news for OP!

I guess that makes sense. Cams definitely aren't compatible though with the intake VVT.
