front disc rotor retaining bolt ?

I am installing new brake lines on the front and have a question I did not mention before when installing new rotors and pads, is there supposed to be a 10mm bolt that screws through the rotor to the hub to hold it in place? I noticed on a video i saw on another Volvo they removed a 10mm bolt,my rotors have a hole there for a bolt it appears but there was none on either side when I removed the original rotors.

There is a hole. There is a bolt with a 10mm head on it. The only real purpose of the bolt is to maintain the rotor aligned with the lug bolt holes when you remove the wheels. In older models there was a bolt with a pointed end which helped you to align the wheel which had a hole in it. Many people don't use the bolt as in areas where there is a lot of salt used the bolts will seize in place making bolt removal next to impossible or the heads shear off. That may be what happened in your car. Lucky thing is that some of the axle hubs have 2 holes 180 degrees from each other. If you do re-install the bolts, try using some copper grease to reduce the chances of rusting in place.

Thanks Neil. I am just trying to restore everything on this poorly neglected car and $1500 later i'm just about there.

Tech tip - these only need to be finger tight. I wrench them down to seat the rotor then remove the ratchet handle so they arent more than hard finger tight - 6.28496 finger pounds.

I don't have the bolts that go there, I was just curious if they were supposed to be there and if necessary.Though i would use them if i had them. lol

Sometimes the center bolt gets removed to install certain aftermarket wheels. The PO removes the aftermarket wheels before selling the car and cannot find the center bolt.
