1987 volvo 740 gl stationwagon stuck in turbo (overdrive)

Post by volvogirl37 »

I have a volvo station wagon and on the gearshift is a button you can push and it goes into a overdrive and makes the engine rev up and the RPMs go really high. I never use it. I started the car one day and it was on and wouldn't go off. I live in southeast kansas and none of the auto mechanics in the area will even let me bring it to there shop because they don't work on volvos. I am afraid to drive it for fear of ruining the engine. If anyone knows anything, please!!! help!

Thanks.

This is an automatic transmission? If so, when you push the button it takes the car out of overdrive and the engine speed goes up approximatelly 1000 rpm. This will not hurt the engine, just consume more fuel. There is a solonoid on the driver side of the transmission that has problems with wiring at times. They just break off and can be repaired. Sometimes the solonoid also goes out and can be replaced. IPD has a plate to just replace the solonoid (spelling?) and it is much less expensive. This is good if you never pull a trailer.

Hope this helps.

The overdrive button on my volvo 940 turbo 93'

was disabled by a volvo shop years ago, but recently the overdrive has been going on and off at random intervals, usually a once or twice during a 20 minute drive.

Is there a loose wire somewhere? is this easy to fix? The button doesnt work, so I can't shut it off.

Thanks,

Rich

Hard to tell what they did. There are wires under the car, but if disabled??

Check your fluid level too.

what type of fluid?

what is the best way to know whether it is a relay or a solenoid on the transmission?

Try turning the key on to position 2 or where it would be running. Do not start. Click the overdrive button on the gear shift. You should hear a click if all is hooked up right. No click, check relay, fuse and wiring to the solonoid. Try this first.

Fuse was good.

Im checking the relays.

I got a look at Vadis,

it shows that the relay is circular and is the first relay on the top left.
It says that the light out warning and the overdrive share a relay. Is this true or is there an error in Vadis.

I am confused because I am looking on ebay, and it shows that the overdrive relay is actually rectangular...
and it shows that the light warning relay is a different relay.

These are the ebay numbers. Search for em in ebay to see them.
