It does vtl -- thank you!

I finally got to start the engine today, and it ran, success!

Discovered that JB Weld can be useful for a variety of fixes. Here is camshaft plug cap after tapping the disc and then applying a coat of JB paste on both sides covering the rip, so it can be reused.

have you checked your VVT valve, i see you have the old type. i changed mine it was clicking like it should but was jammed up, no codes.

Here is a DIYer view of vvt service.
  • the rotational movement of new vvt along the belt is smooth with zero resistance, the old wobble a little and you can see air bubble in the oil cavities and spaces.
  • the vvt ring that seats over the camshaft and mates with seal moved in and out (clicking) with little more play when comparing with the new one
Both front seals were letting oil o. Old intake seal moved inward with little push -- pulling it out was no effort at all. The exhaust seal leaked where its inner mated with vvt -- it too came off without much effort. It wasn't a flood like leak, but a slow leak of oil.

I'm not hearing resonance at 1200-1400 rpm.

I'm happy to clean it and ship it to anyone interested for their science project.

thanks someone has opened one up, it looks far more complicated than other videos ive seen of Toyota VVTs.
In relation to my VVT i dont believe the end wobble is a huge concern because i dont think the VVT rotates that far in operation. I am trying to source one 2nd hand.

Thank you for sharing a look inside darryl. Did you find a used one locally? MVS member precopster may be a local help.

Meanwhile, ours is back on the street today. I think, it is worth reading VIDA for specific model year and comparing hands-on notes for the first timers like me. Pete's help with getting timing marks back by-hand was priceless.

It is running, 100+ miles since the maintenance. However, the tensioner needle is resting at 12:30, not 12 O'clock -- does it need re-tensioning?

Also, the air guide under the radiator was removed to replace 2 spring nuts at radiator mounting which were rusted, thread free, and zip tied. There was neither wetness nor a drop at the base of the auxiliary bracket when the air guide was removed at the start of this service two weeks ago. But there were ample drops, fresh and clean fluid ready to fall to the ground. I'm assuming it's steering fluid that escaped from the reservoir hose connection at the s-pump which loosened during the acrobatic events.

The location of these drops were the two mounting points for the bracket that house belt tensioner. Hence I ask, does ac compressor leaks oil, and if so, it wouldn't be clean as synthetic oil in apperance?

No need to retension.

Compressor runs PAG oil with green dye, if memory does not lie.

OK, great. All looks dry under the engine. Now, moving to this fix -- loud at the cat/flex connection:

Not sure how to upload an .mp4 file. Here it is... tapping audio/video sound under the carriage:
