2008 V70 NO AM Radio reception

Post by Higg »

Recently purchased a 2008 v70 and have been unable to get the AM band on the radio to work. I have read some other forum that mentions a problem w/Am radio reception. According to the dealership I'm out of warranty as of the end of Dec.2011. Does anyone have any info on this situation. Thanks for all replies

Well, not much specific help here but generally I would suspect one of two things:

1) the internal AM tuner is faulty and your radio needs repair/replacement or
2) the antenna is faulty/loose/broken and only weakly catching the signal

There is only one radio and radio cable so :

Are your FM stations receiving perfectly? If these are weak also, then I would suspect an antenna/cable problem.

If your FM stations are perfectly strong and you have no AM at all, your radio is likely the culprit.

Follow up: Much to my amazement my local Volvo Dealership has agreed to repair the the radio....the part, AM module, cost over $700....I'll be responsible for the cost of installation $145. They basically diagnosed the problem over the phone...everything works except the AM radio, which is absolutely quiet...no static. I have the High Performance Sound package.

Higg: thanks for the follow-up, though I just registered (2014) through this website's forum and am on others looking for answers, too.

This, unfortunately, is an all-too-common problem with the Volvo's audio systems (my XC70 also has the Premium Audio system HU-850). Did the AM module replacement work? -I was informed that the entire unit -$1300- needed to be replaced, and I am out of warranty.

My Volvo service manager mentioned that the XC70's wiring is different from that on the 2008 S60 (my other vehicle with same premium audio system), so the brass band mentioned as a fix in TNN39-35 will not work for the XC70.

For what it is worth, I had the radio in my 2008 XC70 repaired by Hi-Tech Electronics of Van Nuys, CA. I looked at various UTube sites for removal instructions, quite tricky but doable. The radio unit was back within a week and now functions beautifully. The local dealer had quoted me $1500 to do the job; for reference it cost me $325 out of pocket.
