Heater fan does not work at all. V40, 03, 38K miles, pet 1.8

Currently the heater fan does not work at all, on any setting (0,1,2,3,4,5,6) Changing any other climate control setting makes no difference.

As background:
6 months ago, the heater fan would not switch off at all, on any setting. The heater fan has only once worked since it stopped, by some mystery that I had nothing to do with. (It worked for one journey of about 20 mins!)

Any ideas?

This seems to be a common problem on the S/V40, especially in the UK.

Basically it appears that there is a resistor which goes bad. In some cases it has caused a full stop to the heater, in others it won't switch off and in some both symptoms have been experienced. Sound familiar?
