Your V70 and my S80 are both P2 platform cars. So likely your fuse box is here under the hood. June

my 2001 and 2002xc70 doesnt have a fuse for the headlights (actual light is the fuse) there is a shunt under the dashboard that might be worth checking or check the relay in the engine bay fuse box. Not my pic but the shunt is the card looking thing with an obvious brown burn mark

Now that you reminded me, on P2 cars the headlight relays are soldered to one of the main computer boards. There should be a write up on MVS about soldering in new relays as if one of the relays goes bad Volvo just replaced the whole module. I don't know how to add a link to those threads. June

This is related to your leaking steering line and alternator - there should also be a fuse panel on the end of the dashboard visible when you open the door.

I had a 2002 XC70 that I bought used that suffered a failed alternator caused by a leaking power steering hose. In addition the headlight blew, but rather than failing it wedged itself together and caused a complete short. I have never seen this before, but there is always a first. If I recall the blown fuse for this was under the hood, where June shows it in red. There is a legend/diagram with the fuses and their function on the bottom of the lid - visible when you remove it.

The dashboard panel should also have a a card with a legend/diagram - you will have to look and see if there is a fuse there that could have blown.

Next is the CEM as darylrobert and June mention. On my 2002 I kept blowing fuses because one of the shunts was bad. I also got some smoke - not good. It took me weeks to find the problem. So if you find blown fuses and changing them doesn't solve the problem look at the shunts and relays on the CEM. When you power it up again it would not hurt to listen, look and smell. Any sense of burning stop and power down.

darylrobert - is that the shunt shown in the picture with the brown burn mark the one associated with the headlights? If so this is the one that is most likely bad. Best source of shunts is used Volvos - just match part numbers.

If you end up playing with the CEM, disconnect the negative lead to the battery.

Sorry for the incorrect information from me above, I just checked my car and there are indeed dipped beam fuses on the cabin (dashboard) fuse box. There are places for them also in the engine bay fuse box that are empty, i believe they use either location.

the shunt pic isnt mine, from memory it looks like the dipped beam shunt, the other two are the left and right indicators.

SuperHerman was the alternator failure the diodes?

darrylrobert - sorry I don't know what failed on the alternator. The prior owner had it repaired/replaced at a shop, which cured one problem but not the rest. They told the prior owner the computers were fried and repair costs were more than the car was worth. I bought it on the cheap for a project. I learned a lot.
