88 Volvo 765 tic AW 71 Overdrive Not Working

Post by lummert »

I cured a problem of my overdrive not working on my AW 71. I purchased an overdrive solenoid bypass kit from IPD. I had it installed and it leaked out 2 quarts of ATF. I took my OD solenoid to the parts store and purchased an O-ring that was a little thicker and had that installed and my overdrive has been working good since then. There is no overdrive lockout, but I do not need this because I do not pull a trailer and I have no hills or mountains here.

Hpoe this might be of help to someone with the same problem.

IPD is at www.ipdusa.com

That slot that is in the bypass plate can be machined out (drilled) from the original OD solenoid too.

Thanks for the reply. I had the bypass plate installed before I started using my computer again after 9 years. I have learned a lot from the forums about repairs and parts, OEM, used, and aftermarket. I did have to update my computer after it sitting for 9 years. :)

You need a computer if you own an old volvo.
The only information thats not available is for stuff thats not commonly done, like tearing trannies apart.

The other usefull thing is ebay for used parts,
I just bought an Idle Air control valve for my 90 740.(regina).

List price $268 from FCP groton.
I paid $24.
Bought a complete instrument panel (for the speedo) for $50.

The solenoid failure is common, heres why,

Other photo'd repairs, good if you need to do a fuel pump in tank.

I agree that I don't know how I got along without a computer. I was able to buy a grille and left mounting bracket including shipping for $42. I then ordered the right mounting bracket and retaining clips shipped less than $30.
An aftermarket grille alone was $135.

I located an airbag 40 miles from home for $30 and I didn't have to pay $30 shipping for hazardous materials.

Thanks for the info
