Is it just coincidence that the extracted axle is laying on a newspaper ad for new cars? Hmmmmm.
A reminder to us DIYers that there is always a choice.

Thank you ALL!

Added 2qts MOBIL 3309, and now keeping an eye on few drips on garage floor which is NOT consistent, not like each morning.

Here is a photo, red arrows point to older collections, mostly evaporated. New drive axle seal on at driver's side, or overfill?

Great that it worked out! I was thinking

Here are two photos. Feeling real bad!

After this broken drive axle incident, I acquired a used pair from a 2007 XC70 with 53,000 miles. Serviced and installed the donor pair, more here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=62033&start=20

Now looking for a donor drive axle OR just the inner CV joint to replace what broke. I'll then have the original pair of axle on the shelf with new GKN boots ready to use.

Stumbled onto this old thread.

How in Hades did 7.5 cm of steel axle snap like that?

I looked at the snapped surface then, a hairline tear with rust was present. Now we know that steel axle can snap.

If a small crack appeared at some point, it will develop under force. In theory the axle is stressed under torsion, and should be fairly solid - especially that one was genuine. But I've seen another one snapped like this. I remember forcing at the junk yard the same with a 2 ft thick pray bar - no luck, it would simply not budge. Guess slide hammer and weld will fix many of these but there's a chance if the locking ring was stretched (is one removes it and puts it back it will stay wider) or was the wrong size, then not much will remove that axle from the transmission. While there, just for fun, these stuck axles may not be the worst out there
