I thought true mileage moved with the odometer, stored in the electronics of that unit.

You can lower the mileage on the odometer mechanically,but true mileage remains stored in the cluster(cluster module).
The odometer unit is just odometer,gears and motor.
Memory is somewhere in the cluster along with diagnostics.

I swapped over The replacement cluster, but kept The old mechanical unit. Now everything works including The diagnostic. And was able to reset The servicelight yey!
If you say True mileage follows The cluster i think i have to live with that.. Sadly.
