Corona bench tear down, autopsy of,a 1999 9171703 AC compressor

Post by abscate »

Musings

After removal of the clutch and magnet, 6 m8 (12 mm head) bolts hold the four pieces together

Front cap

Body half one

Body half two

Rear cap

Two reed valve assemblies live in each cap end

Bakelite pistons ride in the cylinders in each body half, they have semi spherical metal bearing on top and bottom

They are driven by the eccentric cam in the middle with axial float of the cam controlled by needle bearing, and radial by a rear bearing on the rear plate and a bushing/seal in the front plate

Needed refurb parts...110 x2 mm oring for the caps and body

Front bushing, that will be a pain to find I bet

Was your goal to just tear down and see what's what? or are you rebuilding it?

Also, threads like this always amaze me in this level of photography for something like a repair forum would have been near impossible 5-8 years ago. The level of cameras in phones is just remarkable.

Sigh. I have so much less time for the car in these corona times. Looks good though!

Why do you need 110 x 2mm 'O' rings?

Big o-rings go between each body section and the two end plates seal it up.

These things are things of beauty inside. I can’t believe be how cheap they are, looking at the precision machining.

This type of design is often used on high pressure hydraulic pumps. It is called a swash plate design (the eccentric cam part in the middle). The hydraulic pumps are extremely close tolerances and do not tolerate any dirt. I have never seen one with front and back pistons.

How are the balls installed and removed? On hydraulic pumps, a foot with spherical bearing is held by pressure against the swash plate. They have no suction capability.

If the bushing is bronze, it should be easy to have some made. I think the O-rings could also be sourced. Someone could start a cottage industry rebuilding these. Hydraulic pumps are rebuilt for about 1/3 cost of new.

I've always wanted to do this, the main deterrent was the time it would take to go down the rabbit hole to source the internal parts. The inside is every bit as beautiful as I had imagined.
