Replacement Gas Cap

Post by chrism »

Oooops, I guess I drove off from the gas station and left the gas cap sitting on the roof of the car. (The tether broke years ago.) Funny thing is that I got NO CEL. Didn't know it was missing until the next fill-up.

Has anyone replaced their OE cap ($35-40) with one of the aftermarket caps, ie Stant, Gates, etc ($5-10)? Do the cheap ones fit right and seal properly?

Thank you!

The leak test starts when the tank is at 75% or so. You will eventually get the code.

I hardly recall I've used Gates on my V70. Maybe. Perhaps. :)

These caps last quite a while. I once replaced it with an S80 one (I like it better), fits fine but got the CEL after a while. It think the small rubber cord can be bought separately, but at the junkyard/ebay there's plenty still good

Thank you guys for the input. It seems every time I try to cheap out on parts it comes back to bite me. I live near Voluparts and they have OE for $31 including the tether so I think I'll do that. Even if the cheap brands work right they don't have a tether so I could see myself leaving it at the gas station again.

Im using a genuine volvo lockable cap i found at the junkyard with the keys over 10 years ago. i just changed the rubber and its good. I also carry a spare in the trunk. No tether i hold the cap or hook it on the filler door. Never ever put anything on your car roof, i put my wallet on the roof once...lesson learnt

I've replaced mine with an original one. It came with the tether and I was told by the dealer that they don't sell the tether individually.

Damn. I was fooled by the dealer

Anyway, at the same time I had to change the filler flap hinge which gave me a distinctive klonk when after each left turn I had a "like new" refuelling experience 8)

Go back to them with their part number and ask for a free one since you had to do their job that day
