I think I was using it pretty liberally, probably a good idea to differentiate in case someone else reads this for help and gets confused.

I got anxious and started removing the exhaust, I'm just going to tear it down and pull the head :(

Back in the pre electronic days those marks always meant TDC OR within a few degrees of TDC.

Now, no one even has a timing light anymore.

No harm done.

I still do :D

When removing the head, do you guys leave the exhaust manifold bolted on? I have the cold side of the turbo removed and it looks like I could leave the rest and have plenty of space to pull it (I won't be using a hoist).

I have one from my LH 2.2 Volvo and my '92 Miata. No need on LH 2.4, that EZK electronically adjusts ignition timing. Only the pros know how to use those! :lol:

I usually remove the exhaust manifold, but you might be able to leave it on. The turbo hot side should probably leave enough clearance to lift it off.

I got two of the relics. I keep them in the same box as my Hawk Dwell-Tachometer tester. Perhaps I should repurpose them as strobe lights.

Nasty! The valve pictured is the one that appeared to be leaking the most during previous tests. Bad angle of the pic but visually it is straight with the line and there are no signs of contact on the pistons/valves, phew! It's got some of that carbon or whatever on it and on the seat which may have been keeping it from sealing, but it wipes away so I figured the brake cleaner and MMO would have dissolved it, maybe not.

Other than just general disgustingness, anything jump out at you all? I knew the valve seals have been leaking for a few years, might be where most of the build up came from.

Use a straight edge against the valve stems to check for straightness. Check in at least three positions.


They could use a good lapping.
