Yup, i popped the cv axle all the way in and the gears still won't engage.

Should I start saving for transmission repair, or should my new CV axle be all I need to replace?

nope... i cranked it with the axle nut and only my side was turning

when i tapped it in, before now, I actually got it to go a few feet forward and back, but then it slipped as soon as i put it above 1 rpm..

edit: added pictures, just picked up another axle from AutoZone to test out

You may be able to see all the way into the trans where the splines engage. With a flash-light you may be able to see if the splines are badly damaged. If they are sound, It may only need a new axle with good splines. The fact that only the end of the shaft splines are chewed may be a good thing. The end of the axle looks bent or it may just be the pictures. If you could find a cheap used axle to at least try. Did you junk the previous one?

.... didn't even think about the old one... sheesh

I'm having trouble getting enough forever to pop the new one in...
makes me think maybe the first new one was never in all the ways

inside the transmission looks okay i think, it looks like the axle was softer than flywheel

but i have to wait until 2mrw to buy a sledgehammer to get enough force on this axle

You may be able to salvage the axle. The end of the axle will not contribute much to the torque transfer from transmission to axle. Get small files and shape the end splines to allow engagement into the transmission. At this point the rest of the axle would be aligned and can be forced into position.

I think the axle probably wasn't seated all the way. Make sure that it's all the way in, sometimes it helps to put a little grease on that circlip to center it. On aftermarket axles, I've had issues with that circlip being too large to slip into the transmission, and it's helped to squeeze it tighter with some pliers.

I'll try that now, i just put in the old axle and was able to turn both wheels, so I'm glad I'm just dealing with an axle issue here still

I bet that's a relief! I think it's definitely just the axle. Go ahead and replace that.

Put in a new axle from autozone and it slipped right out again... does that mean its my flywheel?
