Alternative to Volvo Tool 999-5761?

Post by RickHaleParker »

Went to change the Alternator Decoupler pulley on my 2003 S40. The bolt is a standard 10mm Hex head rather then the expected Torx.

Volvo tool 999-5761 is the 10mm sleeve that goes in the Counterhold 999-5760.

I have a counterhold (999-5760).
Anybody know of a 999-5761 alternative that is obtainable?

Are you saying this end is just a 10mm hex socket for a 10mm hex bolt head?

If so could you just do this?

socket wrench ->1/4 inch extension-> decoupler-> 10mm socket

I actually have a decoupler but I can't find it so I can't test whether a 1/4 adapter would fit. I think it would.
The challenge might be the 10mm socket thought. you may not be able to get much of the splines to engage in the pulley if the socket takes up too much room .

If that is an issue, maybe if you had a spare 10mm socket you could grind it down on the adapter side and/or the socket side to reduce overall length so more of the decoupler tool engaged into the alternator pulley.

I wonder if that would work.

Yes that is what I am saying.
999-5761 is extensively a 10mm nut driver with a 10-11mm diameter shaft that is ~40mm long. The bussiness end cannot be more then 13mm deep. Overall length is 53mm or longer.

By the time one grinds a 10mm socket down to 13 mm length there is not enough meat to engage the extension and the bolt head without slipping. These are torqued to 80 Nm ( 60 ft-lbs ). The extension has got to be part of the tool, like a nut driver.

Found four kits with the H10 bit for under $50.00. Wish I could find just the H10 bit.

I will head to the local Pawn Shop Saturday and dig through the tool bin. I might get lucky.

What about something like this?
You'd have to verify if would fit under the decoupler though. When I got a triple square one for my s70 (not torx) the shaft of it was
too wide for the hole in the decoupler. I had to grind down the shaft of the triple square driver to get it to fit.

These from harbor freight are cheap enough that there's low risk if you have to modify and potentially ruin the tool.

Might be able to modify the longer ones. Little concern about the shaft thickness. Might twist and snap at 80 Nm. Knuckle buster.

The 1/4" shaft on shorter would snap for sure. Cut off the 1/4" shaft and it would be too short. Knuckle buster for sure.

Those fasteners are tight. WCM and I did one once and he stood on the alternator while I stood on the extension.

Neither of us are Twiggy.

Make sure you get the thread right, too. Lh or rh?
