2002 xc70 Coolant Leak Driver Side Rear after changing TB & HG

02 V70XC. Changed my timing belt and head gasket this week. Put everything together yesterday and as I start cleaning tools and putting everything back in order I notice coolant dripping from the rear of the engine on the driver side. I can't see where it is coming from so I need ideas and any diagrams anyone might have so I can get my wagon back on the road- any advice would be outstanding because this was one hell of a project!

Likely the banjo fitting for the pcv coolant loop. Easy to get dirt in there.

All new hoses and clamps, all hose fittings cleaned to shiny metal for install?

Thanks! Do you have a diagram by chance of where this is at- almost everything all new, spent a week on this project and $$ to stand back and watch my coolant drain

It’s really buried

Take out the air cleaner, snorkel ticked out of way, then remove the induction hose over the top of the motor

Put bags over all open hoses

In the rear of the head is a good size bolt head sticking out 1 cmftom block, that’s the banjo bolt for the pcv coolant loop

Part circled, approximate position shown with arrow

Other possibility is the heater core hose which is a conventional hose and clamp in same area.

Banjo bolt is good. The coolant leak was put on the back burner because I my intake cam seal was not properly seated and I had a leak. Rookie mistake. I had to pull the cam cover and fix that and we all know those 42 bolts take forever.

This is my second head removal and my first went flawlessly on my s70 so I was a bit arrogant I guess.

The coolant leak has me baffled because I can't see anything. From the top of the engine I can't see any leaks but it is dripping down the bottom on the driver side and it is a new leak but I did not mess with anything down there. I took the car for a quick spin and I'm losing coolant fast.

The head gasket is a big job,i admit when i read your title i was like OMG WTF is a HG. i tried removing the head on my old v70 motor and broke a socket trying to undo the first bolt. I fear its leaking from the head? Clean the area thoughly then only you can get a visual on the leak.

Definitely not the head gasket, if it was the head gasket it would be leaking oil as well. I can't get a visual on the leak its in the rear of the motor. Its either a turbo line or heater core hose from taking the exhaust manifold off.

My first head replacement i ended up having a head bolt drilled out due to not having a deep 14mm 1/2 in socket and stripping the bolt. It's not a tough job really just alot of steps and the use of a pipe on the ratchet (I'm a girl).

Not necessarily. Head gasket failures can do many different things.
Back in the day when I worked on cars, they had a small hand pump that you attached to the radiator cap and pumped up pressure. Maybe 1 to 10 lbs of pressure to help find the leak without having the engine running. Of course you would need one to adapt to the Volvo cap. I'm not sure if the Auto parts stores rent them out.

Coolant is not coming from the head, its coming out toward the firewall. The head is dry.

I have no radiator cap to use the pressure tool.
