S70 rear exhaust cam seal continues to leak

S70 rear exhaust cam seal continues to leak

1998 S70 GLT with approx. 200,000 on engine. Have replaced rear exhaust cam seal at least 4 times over the past several years. It begins leaking quite soon after doing so. I have used Volvo and OEM seals. Have never replaced rear intake exhaust cam seal and there is no observable leaking. Advice or thoughts?? Car runs and handles beautifully, otherwise. Thanks.

Pcv system overdue?

If it's not clear why people are asking about PCV system and the glove test it's because if the PCV system is bad, it will lead to excessive crankcase pressure which pushes on all the seals in your engine.

And if the pressure is high, your cam seal could suffer and the excess presure could be the source of the continued failures.

Open the hood,remove oil filler cap,put a latex glove onto the filler kneck,start the car and see if it inflates or it's being pulled down with vacuum.

If it inflates pcv system is clogged.
If not...it's ok.

You check for crankcase pressure build up by tying a latex glove to the Oil filler. It should be a vacuum that suck it glove down. Pressure will push the glove up.

Mucho thanks. I did the glove test and it inflated. I am now in the process of renewing the PCV system. I'm also trying to remove the oil pan to check things out with oil pickup, etc. Having difficulty getting any sort of wrench, socket, etc. on the front corner passenger side bolt on the oil pan. Will try removing the wheel and fender liner for access. I keep wondering how much longer I'll keep this 1998 car going but it just doesn't seem to want to die and it just runs and drives so well, even with 270,000+ miles.

If you keep up the maintenance and repairs you got another 270,000 miles to go.
