DIM replacing all same numbers but does not work

So like I told you before I had a damaged DIM from a 2003 S60

and today a friend brought one DIM with the exact same codes as mine.

when I connected to the car, it showed only the "clocks" like speed, temperature, and fuel tank.

BUT it didn't show kilometers and messages. both of them were totally black.

the guy tried changing bulbs but no difference.

and he said maybe we need to scan it and reprogramm.

I read here that when the numbers of the DIM are the same, it should work but with other mileage ....

what could be the problem?

DIMs from 2002-2003MY cars are very "sick". You could get DIM with same issue like yours original DIM.
Also, can be different SW between 2002 and 2003 MY clusters.
Do you have a DiCE? If yes, I can check it online, and if need, I can reprogram it also.

well I didn't buy the one my friend was offering. I just have the "bad burnt" DIM of my 2003 S60 and also a 2001 xc70 DIM which I bought in order to have my windows, lights, and lock working.

so in conclusion that one of my friend "probably" was already having its "own" issues like my original one had?

mmmmm so I avoided the same rock I used to have....

DIM from 2001MY car WILL NOT WORK on any cars except 2001MY. You have to use DIM start from 2002MY car, in some case need to reprogram it for your car exactly.

See as yagger says, which year is your friend's DIM ? It is a bit surprising for only the needles to work. Hard to say if it's damaged or it's a software problem. May try to open it see what's going on inside, if someone damaged the chips perhaps ? It may even be good enough to bring it to a repair place.
